Rite, Right, Writing Circle

A weekly creative writing circle for nonbinary, queer, and women people to rite, right, write together. Any style, genre, and skill level are welcome; held live over Zoom.

This is a process space to learn, grow, and become while connecting and building community with others.

We welcome all raw, unedited, and rough drafts—the is a process space not a technical critique or editing space.

Each week we will meet for 90min and our circle will include a freewrite session with prompts offered, reading, and sharing time.

I began holding space in writing circles during my time in Los Angeles serving in community at Tia Chucha’s Centro Cultural. I noticed a strong lack of gender diverse voices at the weekly open mic and wanted to encourage more inclusion and perspective in that space. So together, we came up with me hosting a weekly writing circle that would meet just before open mic every Friday. That was back in 2010!

I continued that circle until I moved in 2012 when poet and teacher Alex Hohmann graciously continued holding that space. When I arrived in central Texas, a small town, I again noticed a lack of voices having volume and space, so I started up a weekly writing circle there from 2013-2017. I have been published in various journals online and in print, and in 2015 I published my collection called “bloodstories : a cycle of 28 poems” via Yellow Chair Press.

I absolutely love the experience of gathering together with others to write and share and listen to one another. There is a particular energy in the space when we are co-creating around one another, an uncanny thread of themes and ideas yet so completely unique to each person. It is an honor to me each time I sit in a circle with others and put pen to paper. It is a chance to get to know myself better, and to know others more deeply and authentically. This is the space I invite you into as we rite, right, write ourselves into becoming!

We welcome these writing styles and more!
